Volunteer for Emergency Services
While 20% of Shelby County lives in poverty, 60% of the residents in
MIFA’s neighborhood are impoverished. The challenges of the working
poor often lead to sacrifices – for example, heads of household in our
area are often left wondering whether to pay for utilities, rent, food
for their children, or clothing for their elderly family members. In
addition to the struggles families face, seniors living on fixed
incomes also experience difficulties related to the rising costs of
simple but essential items. An average of 75 families come to MIFA for assistance each weekday between 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. We are always looking for volunteers to help screen clients in the morning.
Requirements
Volunteer receptionist applicants should be mature adults with high
school diplomas and two years' relevant experience, in addition to
being available during Emergency Services office hours, between 7:30
and 10:30 a.m. on weekdays. Volunteers will work directly with clients
arriving to apply for services, and they must be patient, pleasant, and
capable of maintaining confidentiality.
